The SPRINTR trial (Skin Cancer Prevention with Nicotinamide in Transplant Recipients):

As you may know, taking anti-rejection medications increases the chances of developing skin cancer. This study is looking at whether a vitamin called Nicotinamide, may help reduce the number of skin cancers that transplant patients develop.

Nicotinamide is part of the vitamin B family and is found in many foods and natural health products. The vitamin has been proven to safely reduce skin cancer in the general population, but we are not sure how well it works in immunosuppressed transplant patients who are at higher risk of skin cancer.

To participate: You must have had your transplant for more than 2 years and must have had at least one skin cancer diagnosis.

  • If you decide to take part, we will meet to discuss the study in detail and obtain your consent, and we will collect your medical history to see whether you are eligible to join the study.
  • You will also have a skin exam with a dermatologist. If you are eligible to proceed, you will be randomized (like the flip of a coin) to receive either the Nicotinamide, or a placebo, which looks and tastes exactly like Nicotinamide but has no real health effects.
  • You will not know which you are receiving, nor will your doctor or any of the study team. 

This initial baseline visit will take about 1 hour to complete. You will return to the clinic every 4 months for a follow-up skin exam to check for any skin cancers and health issues, which is recommended as routine care for transplant patients who have had skin cancer in the past. These follow-up visits will take about 30 minutes.

Expérience requise

Eligible Participants must have had a solid organ transplant at least 2 years ago and have had at least 1 instance of skin cancer. You must also be currently immunosuppressed on tacrolimus or cyclosporine.

We are looking for research participants for our clinical trial. Participants will come in clinic every 4 months for follow up appointments, and the study will last 2-4 years.

Remboursement

At the initial baseline visit, $25.50 will be given to cover parking/travel expenses. After that there will be no reimbursements.
